Bilaspur School Project  2014-2018
Chandratilak Vidyamandir School, Bilaspur District, India

The society runs primary schooling in the densely forested tribal area near Bilaspur in Chattisgarh, India. Started by a retired Medical Officer, Dr R R Tiwary, this school had been a shining example of social enterprise in tribal community. In this school, 186 village children (72 girls) are getting free education till class 4th.
The society, which has been running on voluntary contributions alone with little support available from other sources, was in danger of closing down in 2013 before the interventions by SSC.
Small-Steps Charity grant helped the school to continue its work from 2014-2018 by
  1. Teacher support - We funded the cost of providing teachers in this remote area.
  2. School infrastructure - improving hygine, sanitation, clean water and electricity supply allowed them to become self-sufficient for years to come
  3. School provisions - We provided for textbooks and free school supplies every year for all students. Essentials such as raincots etc allowed the students to travel easily to school
  4. Transport - The school was able to buy a 4 wheen drive vehicle to allow transportation of teachers and staff to and from the school site which was extremely challenging due to its remote location
